The Labrador Retriever tops the AKC most popular list for the 30th year in a row. Just below the Lab, the Frenchie now takes the #2 spot, ranking above the German Shepherd Dog and Golden Retriever for the first time ever.

 “America’s love for labs is undeniable,” said AKC executive secretary Gina DiNardo in a press release. “They’re such versatile, family-friendly dogs that it’s no wonder they’ve been so popular for 30 years.”

This study used registration statistics from the AKC to compile and analyze the data into this list of the most popular dog breeds registered in 2020.

1 Labrador retrievers

2 French bulldogs

3 German shepherds

4 golden retrievers

5 bulldogs

6 poodles

7 beagles

8 Rottweilers

9 German shorthaired pointers

10 Dachshunds

The Corgi was #10 last year, but dropped to #11. The the Belgian Malinois, which jumped from 60th in 2014 to 37th this year. Some breeds declined in popularity, like the adorable Coton de Tulear, which dropped 50 spots from 31 to 81, and the Boerbel, which declined almost 60 spots.
