IKEA Ordered To Pay Largest Wrongful Death Lawsuit Payout In History

In what’s being called the largest child wrongful death settlement in U.S. history, Ikea has agreed to pay $46 million to the parents of a boy who was killed when a dresser tipped over on him.

The settlement, reached Monday, comes two years after it was filed by California residents Joleen and Craig Dudek. Their 2-year-old son Josef died after a dresser the couple had purchased from Ikea tipped over on him, crushing his neck and causing him to suffocate, according to the suit.

It’s not the first time the Swedish furniture retailer has come under fire for selling unsafe furniture. At least 10 deaths have been attributed to dressers, specifically those manufactured by MALM, in recent years.

You can read all about the MALM furniture recall IKEA has issued by clicking HERE. The first recall issued by IKEA for 29 million MALM dressers was dated 11/04//2016, and encouraged all customers to anchor their chests and dressers or return them to the store. Please double check your home to make sure you don’t have any furniture that could be unsafe for children or animals in this way.
