A New Year Means New Laws For Illinois

There are 253 new rules to living happily in Illinois. Take a peek at this list to see if you are happy with the news laws you must obey.
The full list is available here, but this is my personal highlight list and instructional video for the newly discovered “DUTCH REACH” move.

  • If the boss requires you to use your personal phone or computer for work, the boss must have a reimbursement policy.
(I expect this will get the MOST attention at the office on Wednesday)
  • Children younger than two must ride in rear-facing child-restraint seats in automobiles. Children taller than 40 inches or weighing more than 40 pounds are exempt. The first offense carries a $75 fine at the discretion of local authorities.
  • Blaze pink joins blaze orange as acceptable hunting apparel to ensure that sportsmen and -women are seen by other hunters.
  • Stalking laws will expand to include unwanted messages sent through social media apps. And the law allows businesses, churches and other places of worship, and schools to seek restraining orders against stalkers.
  • 72-hour waiting period for all gun purchases
  • Police can rescue pets from extreme temperatures
  • New jury duty exemption – Mothers who are nursing can now be exempt from serving

This is one is a big surprise, and for those of us who haven’t taken a driving test in over 20 years, we need to watch the video below. A new law tasks the secretary of state with updating the “Rules of the Road” with information on the “Dutch Reach” method of opening car doors.

The “DUTCH REACH” is for drivers sitting in the driver’s seat at the curb. This move involves reaching across the body with the right hand to open the door, thereby encouraging a glance over the shoulder at oncoming traffic, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Why is it called a “DUTCH” reach? It’s been Dutch commonsense for over 50 years. Dutch kids learn it from parents & in school, so now we get to learn it too!
