Not Disney, not animated, and no hot Prince who likes girls who can’t talk?

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s original story, this Little Mermaid movie takes place at a carnival in Mississippi where the title character is being displayed.

In the first trailer just released this week, young Elle (Loreto Peralta) and her journalist brother Cam (William Moseley) head to a circus in Mississippi to check out its real-life mermaid, Elizabeth (Downtown Abbey’s Poppy Drayton).

It also looks like the movie is set up as some kind of bedtime story narrated by a grandmother played by Shirley MacLaine.

This really looks pretty good!

The Little Mermaid will be released sometime later this year.
