SALMONELLA OUTBREAK LINKED TO ONIONS SICKENS PEOPLE IN IN 43 STATES

A recall of onions is expanding and has infected 640 people from 43 states.

At least 85 of them have been hospitalized.

The Food and Drug Administration has warned consumers not to eat onions from Thomson International Inc. The advice applies to red, white, yellow, and sweet onions. Some of the onions were sold at stores including Walmart, Kroger, Fred Meyer, Publix, Giant Eagle, Food Lion, and H-E-B, under a variety of brand names.

Unless you grew your own this year, would be safer to throw out any onions you bought over a week ago or more.

Sickness from salmonella often involves diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps from six hours to six days after exposure, the CDC says. More severe cases may lead to high fever, aches, headaches, lethargy, rashes, and blood in the urine or stool. The illness can be fatal; salmonella leads to about 420 deaths annually in the U.S., according to the CDC.
