More than five million vehicles are being recalled because their airbags might not inflate upon impact.

Oh geez.

In separate announcements on Tuesday, both Honda and Toyota revealed they’ve determined some vehicle models have been found to have faulty air bag inflators installed. Honda’s recall is part of an issue with the now bankrupt Takata corporation, which manufactured inflators for numerous auto manufacturers. The company used them in 2.4 million Hondas and Acuras made between 1996 and 2003. Although the recall was announced Tuesday, Honda says they won’t have the parts to fix the issue for another year.

While Toyota’s recall also centers on a problem with its airbags, it’s not related to the Takata problem. A rep says a faulty electronic part installed in about 2.9 million vehicles could prevent their air bags from deploying in a crash. The affected vehicles include 2011-2019 Corollas; 2011-2013 Matrixes; 2012-2018 Avalons; and 2013-2018 Avalon Hybrids.

Letters should be coming in the mail to vehicle owners soon, but used vehicle records can complicate the process, so if you don’t hear anything in the next few months, reach out to your local dealerships to see if they are accepting your car for repairs. As stated above, Honda says it will take more than a year to get the repair parts. Drive safe!
