When you want to quench your thirst, don’t just grab a glass of water; you may want to grab a glass of milk as well.
According to a new study, milk will hydrate you better than water.
Water is still good, but milk is even better. Milk has sugar, sodium, fat, and protein, which cause milk to stay in your stomach longer, leaving you hydrated longer.
However, if you are lactose intolerant and can’t do milk, grab a bottle of water with electrolytes for better hydration.
The most hydrating beverages are ranked below, thanks to a St. Andrews University research team that tested 13 common beverages to see how they impact hydration. Here’s what they found, ranked from most hydrating over a four-hour period to least.
- Skim milk
- Oral rehydration solutions (like Pedialyte or Liquid I.V.)
- Full fat milk
- Orange juice
- Cola
- Diet Cola
- Cold tea
- Tea
- Sports drink
- Still water
- Sparkling water
- Lager
- Coffee
