Did the world’s most famous hot dog eating champion regain the crown he lost last year?

Joey Chestnut ate his way back to the hot dog eating title on Coney Island’s famed Boardwalk this Fourth of July by breaking his own record. Chestnut scarfed down 70 hot dogs and buns. The event, marking its 100th anniversary, was shown live on ESPN3.

Chestnut, 32, had won eight titles in a row before losing to 24-year-old Matt Stonie last year. In 2013, he set the record with 69 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Stonie ate 62 hot dogs last year, two more than Chestnut.

In a qualifying event last month, Chestnut ate 73½ dogs. In the women’s event, Mikie Sudo, of Las Vegas, successfully defended her title by eating 38½ dogs, beating out three-time winner Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas, of Alexandria, Virginia, with 35.

“Pellet Gun” has won a cherry pit spitting contest in southwestern Michigan for the 16th time. Rick Krause of Tuba City, Arizona, had a pit spit of 48 feet, 2¼ inches Saturday.
A member of the Krause family has won 27 contests since the event began in 1974 to celebrate tart cherries. It’s held at Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm in Eau Claire, 100 miles from Chicago.
