Whitney: A Life In Video [VIDEOS]
I will fully admit it: even when it wasn’t cool to like Whitney Houston, I did. Somewhere in a box in my parents’ house are her first four (maybe more) albums on cassette! I won’t say that I never made a “crack is wack” joke, and my fandom waned over time, but it’s still sad to think that someone with so much talent is gone so early.
I remember the first time I ever heard a Whitney Houston song — it was on a radio show called “Future Hits With Joel Denver,” where they played…uh, future hits. One night, Joel introduced Aretha Franklin’s goddaughter and Dionne Warwick’s cousin and her new song, “You Give Good Love” — and anyone who heard it knew that Whitney was something special.
Her very first #1 was her next song:
After that, she released a song that didn’t do so well, and then she ripped off 6 #1 hits in a row:
“Where Do Broken Hearts Go” was my personal favorite of Whitney’s ballads, but she was a master of that particular craft:
Then — like most artists who catch fire — she cooled down for a bit, but in the late ’90s, she came all the way back:
And then, there was the Super Bowl — Whitney’s performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” was so awesome that it was turned into a single (remember those?) and became the best selling version of the National Anthem ever:
Hopefully Whitney will find the peace that she never seemed to find in life.
