Tis the season to bring the smell of pine and cedar inside with a fresh cut Christmas Tree. Looking to pick out your own and cut it down yourself? Central Illinois has more options than you may think. Get the whole family together for a road trip to one these 5 local Christmas Tree farms that will even let you borrow their saw. Don’t forget the camera! You could be getting a tree and crafting next years holiday greeting card at the same time.

In July 2008, Moore Trees LLC decided to purchase Shoemaker’s Ridge Road Tree Farm and renamed it “Moore Trees”. Moore Tree Farm is a “Choose & Cut” Christmas tree operation and they offer assistance to those who need help cutting down a tree. They have wreaths and fresh greens too, plus a heated gift shop that offers complimentary hot chocolate, coffee, and cookies.

 

 

 

Choose and cut Scotch Pine, White Pine, Douglas Fir Concolor and Grand Fir, Norway Spruce. They also offer 7-8 ft fresh precut Fraser fir. Scotch and White Pine up to 14 ft tall are available. They also provide saws, tree shaking ,twine & help to get your tree home. Prairie State Tree Farm was established in 1981 and is a member of the American Tree Farm system and certified with the State of Illinois as Tree Farm #715, practicing sound forest management.

 

 

 

Dave and Keely Hoover moved to the farm in the Spring of 1988. Dave remembered how much he enjoyed his grandfather’s Christmas tree farm as a boy, so they started planting Christmas trees around the dairy barn. When they ran out of room, they started planting trees in the field south of the barn. Now you can harvest your own tree from their farm in Triviolo, which is 4 miles west of Hannah, IL.

 

 

 

Hardy’s Reindeer Ranch has 5 acres of choose and cut Christmas trees. They also bring in freshly cut Fraser from North Carolina and Douglas Fir, Scotch and White Pine from Indiana. In 1947, Talbott’s Christmas Tree Farm began one mile north of Manito when Earl Talbott planted pine trees as a conservation measure on barren, sandy soil owned by his father, Glen. When Earl’s brother, Bob, returned from the Navy, the brothers began to cultivate the trees into Christmas trees with help from their cousin, Lacey Talbott. Being in business for over 60 years, wins Talbotts Trees the award for being the oldest tree farm in our area.
